About the Award
The Marysa Navarro-Aranguren Book Award seeks to recognize outstanding scholarship that advances the study of women, gender, and feminism in Latin American history. Named in honor of Marysa Navarro-Aranguren, a pioneering historian, feminist scholar, educator, and former president of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), the award celebrates works that deepen our understanding of the historical experiences, contributions, and struggles of women and gender-diverse peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The award recognizes books that demonstrate originality, intellectual rigor, methodological innovation, and lasting scholarly significance. Through this award, LASA honors Marysa Navarro-Aranguren’s enduring commitment to the advancement of historical knowledge, feminist scholarship, academic excellence, and social justice.
Call for Nominations
The Marysa Navarro-Aranguren Book Award is presented biennially at the LASA International Congress for an outstanding book focusing on women, gender, and/or feminism in Latin American history. For the inaugural award to be presented at the LASA2027 Congress, eligible books must have been published between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026.
Books may address any historical period and may focus on any country or region of Latin America, including the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Interdisciplinary works will be considered provided they are substantially grounded in historical research and analysis.
Eligible books may be single-authored or co-authored monographs written in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Edited volumes, anthologies, and collections of previously published works are not eligible.
Books will be evaluated on the originality of their research, the quality of their analysis and writing, their contribution to the study of women, gender, and feminism, and their significance for the broader field of Latin American history.
Books may be nominated by LASA members, publishers, or their authors. Nominations for the Marysa Navarro-Aranguren Book Award must be submitted electronically. Please complete the award submission form by the deadline indicated on the LASA Awards webpage.
By January 2027, the committee will select a winning book. The award will be announced The award will be announced at the LASA2027 Welcome Ceremony, and the awardee will be publicly honored. In addition, the awardee may be invited to participate in a Congress session highlighting the awarded work. LASA membership is not required to receive the award.
