Nomination Letter for Section Representative

To the Nominations Committee,

I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Marcial A. Garcia Suarez, and I am a professor of Political Science and International Relations at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am writing to submit my candidacy for the position of Section Representative to the Executive Committee of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

Over the past eleven years of involvement with the association, and currently as Chair of the Section Defense, Public Security, and Democracy, I have been able to closely observe the challenges faced by our community as well as the opportunities for growth and strengthening that lie ahead.

I believe my experience as an ex officio member of the Section Representation to the Executive Committee (2025) has allowed me to gain a better understanding of both the complexity of the association and the importance of section representation within the EC. During my time working as an ex officio section representative, I had the opportunity to work closely with Prof. Beatriz Padilla, as well as with colleagues and staff members of the Executive Committee.

I am confident that I possess the necessary skills and commitment to continue the work initiated by the previous administration, as well as to contribute meaningfully to the development and achievement of our goals as a plural, democratic, and inclusive Latin American Studies Association.

I believe I can make a significant contribution by representing the needs of the various sections that comprise LASA, as well as by fostering an open, plural, and transparent dialogue between the Executive Committee and the sections, to ensure meaningful participation from all the association's members.
